Stress and Strokes – Interrelated and connected

Posted on

According to a research study led by Jonah P. Zuflacht, a fourth-year medical student at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, revealed that there is a connection between the mental illness and strokes.Psychologic distress may cause the brain to react with a “fight-or-flight” response – the body’s natural reaction to a state of danger. This, in turn, triggers high blood pressure, which is the leading risk factor for stroke. It may also lead to changes within the cell, causing inflammation and oxidative stress, which are also believed to contribute to the risk of stroke.

The American Heart Association (AHA) estimate that almost 800,000 Americans have a stroke each year which is the leading preventable cause of death in the U.S., and almost 130,000 people die from it.

Mental disorders also affect a large number of the U.S. population. According to the statistics from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), over 43 million American adults (18 percent) aged 18 and above have had a form of mental illness.
